Build a Clear Rubric With AI

Students do better when they know what good looks like. AI can draft a rubric that you refine.

Step by step

  1. Name the assignment. Describe the task and what you value most.
  2. Choose criteria. Three to five areas such as ideas, evidence and organization.
  3. Ask for four levels. Request clear descriptors for each level.
  4. Use student-friendly words. Ask for wording a 10 year old could follow.
  5. Share it first. Give the rubric when you assign the work.

What to expect

Expect clear criteria and levels.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not use vague words. Avoid too many criteria.

A good next step

Share it with students first.

A prompt you can copy

Type this into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini

Create a four-level rubric (beginning, developing, proficient, advanced) for a grade [x] [type of assignment]. Criteria: [list]. Use short, student-friendly language and avoid vague words like good or nice.

Good to know. Walk through the rubric with students using a sample of work.
