Gift Card and Wire Transfer Scams: The Rule That Protects You

Scammers love payment methods that cannot be reversed. If anyone asks you to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, cash by courier or cryptocurrency, treat it as a scam. Here are the usual stories they tell.

Step by step

  1. The government or utility threat. Pay now or lose service, or face arrest. Real agencies do not demand gift cards.
  2. The prize or lottery. You won, but must pay a fee first. Real prizes do not cost money to collect.
  3. The boss or friend in a hurry. Someone pretends to be a boss or friend and asks you to buy cards quietly.
  4. The romance story. A new online friend needs money for travel or an emergency.
  5. The check that is too good. Someone sends a check and asks you to send part back. The check bounces later and you owe the money.
