How to use AI to help a grandchild with homework safely

You can use an AI chat tool to help a grandchild with homework by asking it to explain ideas step by step, rather than asking it for the answers. Sit beside your grandchild, type the questions together, and check what comes back. Used this way, AI works like a patient tutor that you supervise.

Step 1: Sit together and decide the goal

Before you type anything, agree on what you are trying to do. The goal is for your grandchild to understand the work, not to finish it faster. Ask what the teacher expects, and whether the school has rules about AI. Some schools allow it for explanations but not for writing assignments.

Step 2: Ask for an explanation, not the answer

Describe the topic and ask for a simple explanation. For example, you could type:

"Please explain how to add fractions with different bottom numbers. My grandchild is in fifth grade. Use a pizza example and do not give the final answer to this problem: 1/3 + 1/4."

Asking it to hold back the answer keeps your grandchild doing the thinking.

Step 3: Ask it to quiz your grandchild

Once the idea makes sense, let your grandchild try. You could type:

"Give my grandchild three practice questions about adding fractions. Wait for each answer before telling us if it is right."

Then have your grandchild type the answers. This turns the screen into a friendly practice session.

Step 4: Check the answers yourself

AI can sound confident and still be wrong. It makes mistakes in maths, dates, spellings and facts. Compare what it says with the textbook, class notes or a trusted website. If the two disagree, trust the school materials and ask the teacher.

Step 5: Keep personal details out

Never type your grandchild's full name, school, address, photos or anything private into a chat tool. You do not need them. Say "my grandchild" and the grade level, and that is enough.

Step 6: Ask for help in your grandchild's own words

If the work involves writing, ask for feedback rather than finished sentences. Try:

"Here is a paragraph my grandchild wrote about volcanoes. Without rewriting it, tell us two things that are good and two things to improve."

Your grandchild then fixes the writing personally, which is the point of the homework.

Step 7: Finish by talking it over

Close the laptop and ask your grandchild to explain the lesson back to you in their own words. If they can do that, they have learned it. If not, go back to Step 2 with a simpler question.

What to watch out for

  • Wrong answers. AI is not always right. Always double-check facts and sums.
  • Copying. Pasting an AI answer into homework is usually against school rules and teaches nothing. Encourage explaining, not copying.
  • Private details. Keep names, addresses, school names and photos out of the chat.
  • Age rules. Many AI tools have minimum ages for having their own account. Use your own account and stay beside your grandchild.
  • Medical, legal or money questions. If a homework topic touches on health, law or finances, treat the AI as general background only and confirm with a trusted official source.
  • Too much screen time. Short sessions with breaks work best.
