How to use AI to read the fine print of a contract
General help only. This is not medical, legal or financial advice. Confirm important details with a qualified professional or an official source.
Fine print is hard to read on purpose, or at least it feels that way. An AI chat tool can turn dense contract language into plain English, point out the parts worth a second look, and help you build a list of questions. It cannot replace a lawyer, and it can make mistakes, so use it to get ready for a decision, not to make one. For anything big, such as a lease, a loan or a business agreement, have a lawyer review it before you sign.
Step by step
1. Pick the section you want help with. Start small. Choose a few paragraphs, such as the cancellation terms or the payment terms, rather than a whole document at once.
2. Remove private details. Replace names, addresses, account numbers and anything personal with labels such as "the company" and "me" before you paste.
3. Ask for a plain-English version. Try typing:
"Explain this contract section in simple language. Keep it short and use everyday words. Here is the text: [paste]"
4. Look for money and time. Try:
"List every fee, payment, penalty, renewal date and notice period in this text, and quote the exact words for each one."
Asking for the exact words lets you check the answer against the original.
5. Ask what could be a surprise. Try:
"What parts of this section might surprise an ordinary customer? Please say these are points to ask about, not legal advice."
6. Check how to leave. Try:
"According to this text, how would I cancel or end the agreement, and what would it cost me? If the text does not say, tell me so."
7. Write your questions. Try:
"Turn the points above into five questions I can ask the company or a lawyer."
8. Verify, then ask a person. Read the original wording next to each AI answer. If something does not match, the contract wins. Then take your question list to the other party, and to a lawyer if the amount, length or risk is significant.
What to watch out for
Keep in mind
- AI can leave out a clause, misunderstand one, or sound sure when it is wrong. It is never always right.
- The meaning of a contract can depend on the whole document, including parts you did not paste.
- Rules about contracts differ by place, and some terms may not be enforceable where you live.
- AI cannot tell you whether a contract is fair or whether you should sign. That is for you and a lawyer to decide.
- Do not paste confidential business material or private personal details.
- Never sign because the AI said it looked fine. Take your time, and do not let anyone rush you.
