How to use AI to summarize a long article or book
You can use an AI chat tool to turn a long article or a book chapter into a short summary. You paste in the text, ask for a summary, and read the result in a few moments. It will not replace reading something you truly care about, but it is a handy way to decide what is worth your time or to refresh your memory. Here is how to do it.
Step 1: Choose what you want summarized
Start with something small, such as a news article, a report from your community group or a single book chapter. Smaller pieces tend to give better results than an entire book at once.
Step 2: Get the text into the AI tool
Most chat tools let you copy the text and paste it into the message box. Some also let you upload a document. If a piece is very long, split it into parts and summarize one part at a time. Only share text you are comfortable sharing, and avoid anything private or confidential.
Step 3: Ask clearly for what you want
A good request says how long the summary should be and who it is for. Type something like this:
"Here is an article I would like to understand. Please summarize it in five short bullet points, using plain everyday language. Then tell me the one main idea in a single sentence."
Then paste the article right underneath.
Step 4: Ask follow-up questions
This is where AI shines. You can keep the conversation going:
"What does the author say about cost?"
"Explain the second point as if I have never heard of this topic."
"List any words in the article that I might need defined."
Step 5: Summarizing a whole book
If you do not have the full text, you can still ask about a book you have already read. Try:
"I just read the novel Pride and Prejudice. Can you remind me of the main characters and the major events, without spoilers about the ending?"
Be aware that for books, the AI may be working from memory and not from the pages in front of it, so it can mix up details. Pasting in chapters gives you far more reliable results.
Step 6: Check it against the original
Skim the original for the points that matter most to you. If the summary mentions a number, a name or a quote, find it in the text and confirm it is really there.
What to watch out for
- Summaries can leave things out or get things wrong. AI is not always right, and it may miss an important detail or add one that was never in the text.
- Health, legal and money topics need extra care. A summary of a medical article, a contract or a financial document is general help only. Confirm anything important with your doctor, lawyer, bank or the official source before you act. For Medicare questions, check with Medicare itself.
- Be careful with private papers. Do not paste in bank statements, medical records or documents with personal numbers.
- Opinions can sneak in. Ask the AI to stick to what the author actually wrote.
- Do not rely on it for exams or work you must understand deeply. Use the summary as a guide, then read the original.
