How to use AI to understand a legal letter (general info only)
General help only. This is not medical, legal or financial advice. Confirm important details with a qualified professional or an official source.
A legal letter can feel scary before you have even finished the first line. You can use an AI chat tool to help you read it in plain English, pick out dates and requests, and work out what questions to ask next. AI can explain general meaning, but it is not a lawyer and it can be wrong, so treat what it says as a starting point and confirm anything important with a qualified lawyer.
Step by step
1. Get the words onto your screen. Type out the key paragraphs, or paste the text if you have a digital copy. Many tools also accept a photo, but typed text is easier to check for mistakes.
2. Protect your private details. Before you paste, replace names, addresses, account numbers and case numbers with labels such as "Person A" or "my landlord." The AI does not need them to explain the wording.
3. Ask for a plain-English summary. Try typing:
"Please explain this letter in simple language, as if to someone who has never dealt with legal paperwork. Tell me who it is from, what they say they want, and any dates mentioned. Here is the text: [paste]"
4. Ask about the words you do not know. Legal letters are full of terms like "cease and desist," "notice to quit" or "without prejudice." Try:
"What does 'notice to quit' usually mean in everyday terms? Please say that rules differ by place."
5. Make a list of dates and actions. Try:
"List every deadline and every action this letter asks me to take, in the order they appear. If something is unclear, say so instead of guessing."
6. Prepare questions for a professional. Try:
"Based on this letter, what questions should I ask a lawyer or a free legal advice service?"
7. Check the AI's work against the letter. Read the original again beside the summary. Do the dates, amounts and names match? If anything differs, trust the letter, not the AI.
8. Take it to a real person. If the letter mentions a court, a deadline, a debt, a property, your job or a lawsuit, contact a lawyer, a legal aid office or your local bar association's referral service soon. Do not wait, because deadlines can be short.
What to watch out for
Keep in mind
- AI can misread a sentence, miss a detail or sound confident when it is wrong. It is never always right.
- Laws differ by country, state and even city. A general answer may not fit your situation.
- AI cannot tell you whether to reply, pay, sign or ignore a letter. That is a decision for you and a lawyer.
- Do not share sensitive personal details. Check the privacy settings of the tool you use.
- Scam letters exist. If a letter demands quick payment or gift cards, contact the sender using a phone number you find yourself, and tell someone you trust.
- Never miss a deadline because you were waiting on an AI answer.
