What you will learn

You will learn to use tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini for real life: understanding a confusing letter, planning a trip, checking whether a message is a scam, and writing a note you are proud of. The best way to learn is to try things on questions from your own day.

Scams to watch for in Boise

Scammers target people everywhere, including a mid-sized city like Boise. These three are among the most common:

  • Fake tech support pop-ups. A loud warning on your screen with a phone number to call is a trick. Close the browser, restart the computer and never let a stranger take control of it.
  • Utility shutoff threats. A caller says your power or water will be cut off in an hour unless you pay. Utilities send written notices. Hang up and call the number on your bill.
  • Fake package delivery texts. A text says a package could not be delivered and asks you to tap a link. Do not tap it. Open the carrier's real app or website yourself, or paste the text into an AI assistant and ask: "Does this look like a scam? What should I do?"

If something happens, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and call the AARP Fraud Watch helpline at 877-908-3360 (free, open to everyone).

Free help for Boise residents

  • Public library. Most libraries in Ada County offer free computer help, classes and Wi-Fi. Ask at the front desk what is offered near Boise.
  • Area Agency on Aging. Find your local office and services for older adults with the Eldercare Locator, or call 1-800-677-1116. Enter Boise or your ZIP code.
  • Medicare questions. Free, unbiased counseling is available through your State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Find Idaho's office at shiphelp.org.
  • Idaho consumer protection. Report scams and file a complaint with the Idaho consumer protection office.
  • Everyday needs. Dial 211 to reach local services such as food, housing and transportation.
