What Is ChatGPT? A Plain-English Explanation
ChatGPT is a program you talk to by typing, a bit like texting. You ask a question or make a request in everyday words, and it writes back in seconds. It can explain, draft, summarize and brainstorm. It is not a person and it is not a search engine, and knowing the difference makes it much more useful.
Step by step
- It writes by predicting words. ChatGPT learned from an enormous amount of text. When you ask something, it builds an answer one word at a time based on patterns it learned. That is why it sounds natural, and also why it can sound confident when it is wrong.
- It is good at language jobs. Drafting an email, explaining a confusing letter, making a packing list, simplifying a news article or planning a week of dinners are all things it does well.
- It is not always right. It can get facts, dates and numbers wrong. For anything about health, money or the law, treat its answer as a starting point and confirm with a trusted source or a professional.
- You do not need special wording. Write the way you would explain it to a helpful friend. More detail gives better answers. If the first answer is off, just say what to change.
- Free versions exist. You can use ChatGPT for free with limits. Claude and Gemini work in a very similar way, so what you learn here carries over to all of them.

What it does badly
Your first conversation, step by step
- Open the site or app. Go to chatgpt.com or install the app from your phone's app store. You can start by typing right away, and an account lets you save your chats.
- Ask a real question. Try: "I am 67 and want to understand what a podcast is. Explain it in three short paragraphs."
- Follow up. Type "Can you make that simpler?" or "Give me an example." You do not need to start over.
- Check the answer. If something matters, ask "How sure are you about this, and what should I double check?"
- Start fresh when you change topics. Use New chat so old context does not confuse the answer.

Is ChatGPT the same as Google?
No. Google finds web pages. ChatGPT writes new text in response to what you ask, and it can make mistakes.
