What you will learn

Scams to watch for in Shawnee
Scammers target people everywhere, including a community like Shawnee. These three are among the most common:
- Fake tech support pop-ups. A loud warning on your screen with a phone number to call is a trick. Close the browser, restart the computer and never let a stranger take control of it.
- Utility shutoff threats. A caller says your power or water will be cut off in an hour unless you pay. Utilities send written notices. Hang up and call the number on your bill.
- Fake package delivery texts. A text says a package could not be delivered and asks you to tap a link. Do not tap it. Open the carrier's real app or website yourself, or paste the text into an AI assistant and ask: "Does this look like a scam? What should I do?"
If something happens, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and call the AARP Fraud Watch helpline at 877-908-3360 (free, open to everyone).
