What you will learn

Scams to watch for in Washington

Scammers target people everywhere, including a big city like Washington. These three are among the most common:

  • Grandchild in trouble calls. A caller says a grandchild is in jail or hurt and needs money now. Hang up and call your family member on the number you already have. Agree on a family code word ahead of time.
  • Fake tech support pop-ups. A loud warning on your screen with a phone number to call is a trick. Close the browser, restart the computer and never let a stranger take control of it.
  • Utility shutoff threats. A caller says your power or water will be cut off in an hour unless you pay. Utilities send written notices. Hang up and call the number on your bill.

If something happens, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and call the AARP Fraud Watch helpline at 877-908-3360 (free, open to everyone).
