Microsoft Copilot vs ChatGPT

If you use Windows or Microsoft 365, you may already see Copilot. It is built to work with those tools. ChatGPT is a standalone assistant. Which feels easier depends on how you work.

Step by step

  1. Find Copilot. Look for the icon in Windows, Edge or your Office apps.
  2. Ask a simple question. Try the same prompt in both.
  3. Test inside a document. Copilot can help in Word or Outlook if your plan includes it.
  4. Check your plan. Some features require a subscription.
  5. Pick the simplest. Use what you can reach in two clicks.

What to expect

Expect Copilot to feel convenient if you already live in Windows, Edge or Microsoft apps, and ChatGPT to feel simple as a standalone chat.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not assume every Copilot feature is free. Avoid mixing work and personal accounts.

A good next step

Try the same email-drafting task in both.

How they differ

  • Copilot lives inside Microsoft products such as Edge, Windows, Word and Outlook.
  • ChatGPT is a stand-alone assistant on the web and in apps.
  • If you spend your day in Word and Outlook, Copilot may save steps. If you want a general helper, ChatGPT is a good place to start.

A fair test, step by step

  1. Pick a task you do often. For example, summarizing a long email.
  2. Try it in both. Copilot inside Outlook, ChatGPT by pasting the text.
  3. Compare the steps and the result. How many clicks? How good was the draft?

Which tasks fit which tool

  1. You are in Outlook with a long thread. Copilot can summarize it where you are, without copying and pasting.
  2. You want help writing a eulogy or toast. A general assistant such as ChatGPT is a good place to talk through ideas.
  3. You need a formula explained in Excel. Copilot in Excel can see your sheet, if your plan includes it.
  4. You want to plan a trip or learn a topic. Either works. Try both for a task and compare.

Cost and access

  • Free versions of both exist with limits.
  • Copilot features inside Microsoft 365 apps generally need a paid plan or an employer license.
  • ChatGPT has free and paid tiers, with paid tiers adding higher limits and extra features.
  • Plans change often, so check the official pages before paying.

Privacy questions to ask

  • Does my work or school account have different protections from a personal account?
  • What does the tool do with my chats and files?
  • How do I delete chats or turn off history?
  • Can my employer see what I ask?

A prompt you can copy

Type this into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini

Write a polite, short email reminding my neighbors about the community meeting on [date] at [place].

Good to know. Work accounts may have different privacy rules than personal ones. Ask your IT team.
